History & etymology
The specific epithet, pongoides, was derived from Pongo, a genus of primates (orangutans), combined with the Greek suffix '-oides' meaning 'resembling,' referring to the highly developed and persistent red indumentum found on the stems, phyllodes, tendrils, and pitchers.
