Morphology

The plant is a climbing species with stems that can attain a length of 10 m and a diameter of up to 15 mm. The pitchers are described as often over a foot long and are richly covered with crimson blotches.

Endemic to Borneo, growing at elevations ranging from 0 to 500 m above sea level.

History & etymology

The species was first brought to the attention of the scientific community by Marianne North, who painted specimens collected in the Bau area of Sarawak, Borneo. It was formally named *Nepenthes northiana* in 1881 by Joseph Dalton Hooker, honoring the botanic illustrator Marianne North. The type specimen was collected near Jambusan in Sarawak in 1876.
