About
One of only two native pitcher plant species found on Madagascar, *Nepenthes madagascariensis* is notable for its historical description and its association with specific swamp and peaty habitats.
Field notes
Distribution & habitat
Eastern coast of Madagascar, most common in the south around Tôlanaro, but found as far north as the Masoala Peninsula. It grows along the edges of swamps at low altitudes.
Ecology
The pitchers play host to at least two species of infaunal spiders: *Synema obscuripes* and *Theridion decaryi*.
History & etymology
First described by Étienne de Flacourt in 1658 under the name Amramatico, in his work Histoire de la Grande Isle de Madagascar.
