*Nepenthes higaonon* is a notable tropical pitcher plant distinguished by its non-decurrent leaf attachment, rounded leaf apex, and monomorphic aerial pitchers with a flattened, ovate lid.
Field notes
Morphology
The species has non-decurrent leaf-to-stem attachment, with the lamina featuring three veins on each side of the midrib and a rounded leaf apex. The pitchers are monomorphic, with the aerial pitchers being cylindrical in the upper third and possessing a flattened, ovate lid angled by 90°. Other features include a shallow depression in the anterior peristome and single-flowered inflorescences.
Distribution & habitat
Endemic to the gravel substrates of Northern Mindanao, in the Philippines, particularly known from Sitio Talangisog, Barangay Eureka, Gingoog City, in Misamis Oriental.
History & etymology
The specific epithet is derived from the Higaonon people, the indigenous cultural group of the site.
Conservation
Critically Endangered, facing threats such as poaching, shifting cultivation, and lack of legislative protection.
