Borneo Exotics — N. dactylifera

Borneo Exotics

About

Nepenthes dactylifera is a tropical pitcher plant endemic to the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the island of Borneo. It was formally described by Jebb & Cheek in 2013 from plants previously treated as the Sarawak form of N. fusca (often sold as “N. fusca ‘Sarawak’”). The fusca complex has since been split into three morphologically distinct species: N. fusca (Sabah), N. zakriana (Sabah), and N. dactylifera (Sarawak). The specific epithet "dactylifera" (date-bearing) refers to the elongated, finger-like appendage on the underside of the pitcher lid. Plants produce slender, variably striped or speckled upper pitchers with a prominent peristome and are among the more forgiving members of the fusca complex in cultivation.

Taxonomy

Nepenthes dactylifera was described by Jebb & Cheek in 2013, splitting the Sarawak populations off from the widely-used horticultural name N. fusca 'Sarawak'. Alongside N. zakriana (from Sabah), it represents one of two segregates from what was historically treated as a single variable species. The name references the finger-like (dactyl-) filamentous appendage beneath the pitcher lid, a key diagnostic character that distinguishes it from typical N. fusca.

Distribution

Endemic to Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo, where it grows as an epiphyte or terrestrial climber in mossy forest. It occupies an intermediate altitudinal band, roughly 300–1200 m above sea level.

Cultivation

An intermediate-climate grower — tolerates warmer days and milder nights than strict highland species, making it a good introduction to the fusca complex. Plants in the Borneo Exotics line originate from an in-vitro donation by the Atlanta Botanic Gardens to Borneo Exotics in 2001, and were first sold in 2012 under the name N. fusca 'Sarawak' before being renamed in 2022 to reflect the current taxonomy. Appreciates bright diffused light, high humidity (70–95%), and an airy, moisture-retentive media such as live sphagnum with perlite and bark.
