Description

Nepenthes rafflesiana is a classic lowland species found across Borneo, Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia. The upper pitchers are very different in form from the lower pitchers, and within the species itself, there is a great deal of variability in the size, morphology and colouration of pitchers, even across individuals within the same colony of plants. It hybridises regularly in habitat with nearby species, including N. gracilis, N. ampullaria, N. bicalcarata and various forms of N. mirabilis, to name but a few. In any colony of Nepenthes rafflesiana, it’s common to find hybrids, unless it’s very geographically isolated from other species. Therefore, it’s unlikely that there is any such thing as “pure” Nepenthes rafflesiana, which may explain the wide range of variability observed in habitat. We really like what we’re seeing in this particular clone as it develops in our nurseries. We still only have juvenile pitchers, but they appear beautiful, with a wide mouth and large, gorgeously coloured wings. The upper pitcher too which we’re seeing for the first time in Aug 2025, is attractively coloured, which isn’t always the case with uppers of this species. Now even better! As of Jan 2025, the quality of all items grown in our indoor facilities has been further improved. This includes all items classified as ‘lowland’, such as this one. Items in our indoor facilities are now grown under extremely hard conditions, with high light levels and have super-tough leaves, making them much easier to establish.See a videoshowing how we achieved this.History:First introduced in 2009.Origin:Horticultural, bred by Borneo Exotics. Created in our nurseries using parent plants which were themselves raised from seed in our nurseries, we isolated just 3 clones from an original 24, as they were the most vigorous and easy to grow, as well as being typical of the species. Two of the clones with a similar appearance to one another have been combined and were launched under BE-3722. This clone is from the same grex of seeds but was kept separate and is not one of the clones comprising BE-3722.Source:From a single carefully selected clone.Photo notes:Plants shipped are of the same clone as shown in these photos. The last photos in the series show plants of typical sale sizes in order of size S, M & L (when available).Climate:Lowland. We find it grows best between about 32 deg. C (90 deg. F) in the daytime, down to 24 deg. C (75 deg. F) at night, although it will tolerate temperatures outside this range.
