Updated for Feb 2026!
This classic swamp-dwelling species will develop basal rosettes when larger, giving the appearance of a carpet of pitchers with few or no leaves. It grows easily in acidic media, but needs warm temperatures, perpetually moist roots and high humidity.History:First introduced in Mar 2006.Origin:Horticultural, bred by Borneo Exotics.Source:From a single carefully selected clone. The female parent is the ‘Williams Red’ form of the species, which remains the deepest and purest red form we have ever seen and used to be sold as rooted cuttings under the code ‘CR-1’. The male parent is a selected clone ofN. ampullaria‘Harlequin’ that used to be sold as rooted cuttings under CR-48. This particular clone was selected from a large number of candidate clones for its excellent colouration. It was originally named asN. ampullaria‘Harlequin’ from the appearance of photos taken in about 2006. However, from what we can now see, the darker red flecks on the pitcher body that give rise to the description ‘Harlequin’ seem to be absent. It has therefore been renamed to N. ampullaria ‘Brunei Red’.Photo notes:Photos are of the actual clone shipped. The last photos in the series show typical sale plants of sizes Small, Medium & Large (when available).

Climate:Lowland. We find it grows best between about 32 deg. C (90 deg. F) in the daytime, down to 24 deg. C (75 deg. F) at night, although it will tolerate temperatures outside this range.
Now even better! As of Jan 2025, the quality of all items grown in our indoor facilities has been further improved. This includes all items classified as 'lowland,' such as this one. Items in our indoor facilities are now grown under extremely hard conditions, with high light levels and have super-tough leaves, making them much easier to establish.
