A notable species, *Nepenthes extincta*, is a tropical pitcher plant known only from Surigao del Sur, Mindanao, and is currently known only from a single herbarium specimen.

History & etymology
The specific epithet extincta was chosen to indicate that this species may already be extinct in the wild.
