About
This species is notable for being the type species of the genus and the first *Nepenthes* to be formally named under the Linnaean system of taxonomy. It is endemic to Sri Lanka and is the only *Nepenthes* species recorded from the island.
Field notes
Distribution & habitat
Endemic to Sri Lanka, occurring from sea level to 700 m altitude, in waterlogged open scrub, along road embankments, and in forest.
History & etymology
First described in print as *Miranda herba* by Thomas Bartholin in 1677. Later described by Herman Niklas Grim in 1683 as *Planta mirabilis destillatoria*, and finally named *Nepenthes distillatoria* by Linnaeus in 1753.
